How can technology help you involve your students as contributors in the classroom? Come and learn tips and ideas to help your students take a leading role in creating content and learning experiences. We will discuss 5 jobs that are a framework for shifting control to the students for their own learning. (This presentation is adapted from Alan November's Student as Contributor: Digital Learning Farm presentation.) http://novemberlearning.com/ and article here: http://novemberlearning.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/students-as-contributors.pdf
Children have been taught in school NOT to find their own answers. They wait for us (educators) to let them access their own answers.
We need to teach students to find their own answers and vet this information.
A student or group of students are selected to find answers to questions that come up during the day.
Best practice at the elementary level is to have the sites for the google custom search engine preselected by students and teachers. This site is the one that is then used by the class researchers.
PreReqs: Setup a google custom search. Choose who will add to the site. 100 users are the max.
Teacher thinks about structure of day and creates headings/outline in a collaborative document. Then a student or group of students are assigned to take notes. If a group of students is being used assign a different heading to each student.
Show the notes as class is progressing.
At the end of the class the teacher will review the notes with the class. Any changes that need to be made are made at this time. The result - PERFECT NOTES.
PreReqs: Decide how you are going to create and share the completed notes to the class. Decide how the notes will be taken and by whom.
Students are given the topic they will be covering.
Students then search for student work on the internet or come up with their own ideas.
Students bring in the ideas they found to create an assignment on the topic.
Highly motivating for students to find other students work.
Students can take work they find and adapt it.
Teacher will find out more about the students.
When students find the assignment then they OWN the assignment.
PreReqs: An idea of the topic. An idea of where students can start their search for other student work.
Other Thoughts
Recording Lectures - Research has show that students who take notes from a podcast of a lecture do significantly better than ones who take the notes live. Students should be able to record lectures. Teachers should podcast every lecture.
Homework vs. Schoolwork - The concept of homework is conceptually flawed. If a student does something wrong in homework they have to wait until the teacher corrects the homework to find out what they did wrong. During this "wait time" mistakes are being reinforced in the brain. Students need immediate feedback when they make a mistake. Brain research says that you must not reinforce errors. Homework should be done in school and schoolwork at home. Students can watch teacher or student created lessons at home. Students can create content at home.
