We use many applications now to do Stop Motion Animation.  Our original instructions are at the bottom of the page.

Creating on iOS Device

iMotion HD https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imotion-hd/id421365625?mt=8 "iMotion HD is an intuitive and powerful time-lapse and stop-motion app for iOS."

Using just a camera, tripod, whiteboard, and computer (2010)

Stop Motion Whiteboard Animation is used frequently in my school.  All you really need to get going is a whiteboard, whiteboard markers, a camera, and a tripod.  When we first started doing this students just watched examples from YouTube (provided below) and figured out how to do it.  We've learned a lot on our journey and will present some of our best practices below also.

Best Practices

  1. Students need to be in groups of at least 2.  One student is the artist and one is the cameraperson.  The artist draws a small part, the cameraperson takes a picture, the artist draws a small part, picture, on and on.
  2. Setup the tripod on a table facing the whiteboard.  Draw a box around the viewable area on the whiteboard so the students know where to draw.
  3. Turn off the flash on the camera.  Make sure you have good natural and overhead lighting.
  4. Try to take all of your pictures at once.  When you have to take some over different days, lighting will change and it is hard for students to get the setup the same.
  5. Either take your pictures at a low quality or reduce them before bringing into Windows Movie Maker.
  6. When you bring your pictures onto the computer you can brighten the background in all the pictures by using a batch process with a program like Photoshop - although this is NOT necessary.
  7. Windows Movie Maker steps: Open WMM.  Go to Options - change the default time from 5 sec to .25 or .125 depending on how fast you want it to be.  Import pictures.  Ctrl A to select all and drag them down to timeline.  Add Title, extend some images if necessary, add text if necessary, and add credits.  Add music.  Save your movie and finish it.  If you are going to post it online you might want to use the Best fit to file size setting when finalizing your movies.
